Fractional Factorial Project 2 Assignment
Assignment Date: March 31, 2025
Due Date: May 2, 2025
Overview
In this project, you will design and analyze a resolution V fractional factorial design. The purpose of this experiment is to screen factors and locate an improved operating setting. You will compare your new setting with the initial setting to determine if any improvements were achieved.
Learning Goals
The following learning goals are associated with Factorial Project 2
-
Design a fractional factorial experiment,
-
Analyze a fractional factorial experiment,
-
Determine which factors are important and which factors are not important,
-
Recommend a new operating setting,
-
Compare density at new operating setting with initial settings,
-
Recommend future experiments and
-
Improve technical writing skills
Process Description
You will continue to use the simulation of the injection-molding machine for this assignment. The range of settings for each factor is shown below. For safety reasons, the injection-molding machine should not be operated above the upper range or below the lower range of each factor. The first Fractional Factorial Project established the starting point and performance of the process at the starting point.
Settings | |||
Variable | Minimum | Maximum | Units |
---|---|---|---|
Mold Temperature | 100 | 200 | degrees C |
Injection Velocity | 1 | 4 | ft/sec |
Mold Pressure | 500 | 950 | psi |
Back Pressure | 50 | 150 | Psi |
Cooling Time | 1 | 120 | seconds |
Experimental Design
You are to use a single replicate of resolution V fractional factorial design with no center points. You are allowed to manipulate each factor plus or minus 10% of its range from the value of its starting point.
Deliverables
You are to provide the following deliverables by the project deadline:
-
A professional, type written report
-
A description of the experimental design selected
-
A proposed model for the process based upon the analysis of the experimental results
-
A careful explanation of the relationship between each factor and density (including the effect of aliasing)
-
A careful explanation of any interactions present in the process
-
A new setting within the range of experiments used in your design of experiments to maximize density
-
An analysis of the new operating setting that includes a graphical analysis, numerical summary and predictions of future performance of density in both a point estimate and interval estimate (with appropriate significance level)
-
A comparison of the density at the initial and new settings that includes a test (with appropriate significance level) to improved performance at the new setting,
-
A recommendation and justification for future experimentation, and
-
All data used in preparing this report in an appendix
